***SPOILER ALERT***
The world has a new superhero and his name is Hancock. Flawed, fearless and oh so cute Hancock has all the stereotypical traits of a hero - and then some. There were some very amazing elements to the movie, namely the special effects. And the humor was, well, funny. There were also some things that fell flat in the movie that left me perplexed and feeling incomplete. In short, it had all the makings of a typical summertime blockbuster. But is it worth your precious time and money?
As anyone who has read my previous articles knows, I am a very big super-hero fan. I am an even bigger movie fan. Ironman is still my most favorite movie of the summer. So when I found out that Will Smith, the father of Summer blockbusters, was doing a movie about a washed up super hero with Superman-level powers I was all for it. I even loved that they added a little twist to it what with having him be a grungy, drunk, anti-hero. How oh HOW did it go wrong?
First of all I will say that I didn't entirely HATE the movie. I loved the premise, I loved some of the interaction between Bateman and Smith. I love Charlize Theron. Did I mention that I just LOVE Will Smith? Anyway that all being said the story was OK. I just couldn't get passed the fact that the story was just OK! There were so many things they could have done better with this.
I don't want to spoil too much because if I say too much about the story it will ruin it for those that want to see it. SO what I'll do is tell what I think they SHOULD have done to make it better. Cool? Ok.
1)They could have gotten rid of the scenes where mere mortals, especially the adults, actually antagonized Hancock. He was drunk, indestructible and had super-strength for goodness sakes! It was funny but only once....
2) They should have had a villain for him to fight. This was worse than what they did in Superman 3! They could have at least ripped from Superman 2 or something. I mean come on! Having him fight 3 hoodish supervillains from South Philly (You know that's where that Eagle symbol he had comes from. Smith is a DIE HARD Eagles fan) that used to mess with him on the playground where he spent most of his days would have been classic.
3) They should have explained better why he does what he does. He obviously has a drinking problem. They did explain it a little but it was such a weak explanation. Try using something that is tried and true rather than using crap explanations. You even have to wait until almost the end of the movie to find THAT out.
4) They should have canned the love story. I am all for a love story. But this was done so poorly it could have been left out.
I really wanted to love this movie. I can truly say it didn't SUCK but it wasn't as good as it could have been. They did leave it open for a sequel but I don't know. I may give it another chance but the trailer would have to be really good and I would have to be sure that all four of the issues I mentioned before are fixed.
This one gets a B (okay, B+).
Comments
A "B" is too kind, this movie was a serious letdown. I thought it was going to be funnier than that. But thank god for The Dark Knight!!
The movie was ok. Not great but ok. I think that the biggest problem was the lack of a real enemy but it was entertaining enough.
And yes, The Dark Knight was awesome and Ironman was very, very good as well. Hell, even The Hulk was good. Much better than the other Hulk movie from a couple of years ago. I actually am very pleased with the quality of most blockbuster movies this summer.
Terminator 4 with Christian Bale next Summer might be very good as well. One can only hope.
I was disappointed as well. I hope they do it again, change his corny X-men costume, and get it right. It has sooooo much potential.
i enjoyed this movie. it wasnt the fresh princes best work but it was a fun movie.
Jason Bateman rules, i loved Arrested development. as for the movie, i really liked it, is not the best but is kind of O.K. i rank it with an 8/10. I like the will smith movies.
i was really disappointed by this movie. it seemed badly rushed
I like it very much! But I prefer to go to this website "blackwhitefriends.com" to know more interesting things ,and discuss with more people!!
I liked this movie a lot. I was lucky enough to see it a week before it came out with the Press here in Denver. I've seen this movie 2 times and I must say I liked it as much as I liked Iron Man.
@EternalSoul: Bold statement! As much as Ironman, huh?
**muah**
It did have a nice curveball thrown in...
