7 Great Video Game Heroines

Jul. 3 9:35 AM by Ladyluck

As heroines become more and more common in the video game industry. I realized just how many there are out there. Too many to name. They began back on the NES and have only grown as the consoles have evolved. So although I am not naming all of them, here is my list of 7 Great Video Game Heroines:

7. Jill Valentine - As one of the two primary heroes of the first Resident Evil game, Jill is a member of the S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team. She is well trained and could pick a lock like no other. She knows how to handle her fear, and has also been in more Resident Evil games than any other character. So step back and watch her kick some enemy butt.

6. Princess Zelda - As a member of the Hyrule royal Family. Zelda is the damsel in distress that Link rescues. As the series went on, Zelda evolved and was able to show her passion, strength, and intelligence by aiding Link. It goes to show the damsel does not always remain in distress.

5. Princess Toadstool - Peach as she is known as now, is the love interest of Mario. She made her debut as a main character in Super Mario Brothers 2 on the NES, and has appeared in various titles since. So whether she is kicking butt against the Koopa clan, playing sports, or racing for a win, Peach can do it all.

4. Rikku and Yuna - Although this is technically 2 characters. I couldn't just choose one from the Final Fantasy series. Rikku is young and feisty. She has a talent for machinery and thievery. On the other hand Yuna is the selfless, pistol-toting leader, who is more serious than her cousin Rikku. She has much personal and spiritual growth throughout the games. But don't let appearances fool you. These two girls make a deadly duo.

3. Samus - You may remember the shock that many male gamers had when the helmet came off and revealed a women as the heroine of Metroid series. Samus was a breakthrough in video games for women, as she was one of the first protagonist females in video games. Set in the future, Samus wears a power suit that protects her from her environment and enemy fire. The suit also has many upgrades and different types of power-ups to showcase a wide array of destruction. So power up and watch her destroy the competition.

2. Lara Croft - Croft is the female version of Indiana Jones. She has two pistols and lots of athleticism. Lara is known both for being an archaeologist and an adventurer. She tends to ventures into ancient tombs and ruins. Croft is quick to figure out traps and puzzles while encountering a wide array of enemies. But don't forget she has appeared in more than 10 games, two films, and multiple novels and comic books. As a triple threat, Croft is a great addition to any heroine list.

1. Cortana - Although she is an A.I character, Cortana is constructed from the flash-cloned brain of Dr. Catherine Elizabeth Halsey. Halsey is the creator of the super soldier Spartan-II project. Cortana is Master Chief's confidant and closest ally during the halo series. She is fearless and as dedicated as any Spartan soldier. So beware, although she has no true human form, she is able to hack into any alien computer system or decode any message.

Great article Ladyluck.

Good list. Jill Valentine FTW!....I don't know, I like her name the best.

I liked this article, but you have some of your information a bit screwed up. In the Jill Valentine article, you say that she has starred in more RE games then any other charater. But she was only in 3, which is easily trumped by Chris Redfields number of 4 (RE1, Code Veronica, Umbrella Chronicles, and RE5, even if it is yet to be released). And she is tied with Claire(RE2, CV, and UC) and Ada (RE2, RE4, and UC)(each which would have made a great addition to this article). But thats about it. Overall, however, it was good read.

Samus should've been #1

I would definitely say my fave is Yuna from FFX, specially on X-2. :P

haha samus would've been my number one as well @ noleaf. Good article.

I do have to disagree about zelda and peach tho, as they portray femininity as weak and helpless, needing the aid of a man to help with their problems. The only zelda I have played where she is remotely independent is Ocarina of time, where she hides as Sheik, but even then she is just a support character.

I love when you all do top 7 lists, this one is great, dont have favorites since i like all of them A LOT. Nice blog.

@ Zexion_VI_OrgXIII - I meant to put Jill is most seen in RE over all other female characters.

@ Navie - I think that Peach and Zelda are coming out of their shells. They may have started on the weak side, but are picking up more and more. For ex. Even tho Zelda hides as Sheik, and is a support character, She did go from being helpless victim to showing she could fend for herself and help out.

cortana for number 1?? you serious??? Out of girls in gaming cortana is number 1? -_-

I would have added Nariko and Aerith.

I've got to agree with noleaf. The two ladies in front of Ms. Aran always seemed to have human interaction throughout their adventures. Hell, a biologically-enhanced supersoldier had Cortana's back. Samus, on the other hand, always kicked ass in solitude.

And Zelda "weak and helpless?" Sounds like someone hasn't picked up Twilight Princess yet.

Actually the order didn't really matter. It wasn't a countdown. It was just 7 Great Heroine Characters that I think are awesome.

mona sax from Max Payne 2 really deserved to be on this list.

what happened!?

What about Joanna Dark? from Perfect Dark

Alis from the original Phantasy Star paved the way for a lot of them.

Also reminds me of some others...Blaze from Streets of Rage series and Tyris Flare from the Golden Axe series. Sega was pretty progressive back then.

Super Metroid, best game ever!!!!

Zelda is definetly not a damsel in distress anymore. Not only is she the leader of pirates in The Wind Waker, but also helps you in the final battle against Ganondorf. In Twilight Princess, she makes some daring decisions for her kingdom and bravely sacrifices herself so that Midna, another strong female character that practically shares the starring role with Link, could carry on her good will. Peach, on the other hand, lives to be rescued (we wouldn't have played Mario Galaxy without her absolute lack of sense of danger, after all), but still has managed to land pretty solid roles in Super Paper Mario and obviously Super Princess Peach. Samus, however, destroys the competition. She is a one woman army, with an arsenal that makes her valuable in a variety of situations. Although she is a bounty hunter, she can manage a good deed without receiving money (MP:2, for example). She also possesses a very strong character, and her quiet nature only highlights her nobility as the guardian of the galaxy. And finally, she can be sexy without even trying to be, which is about 50 kinds of fantastic.

@noleaf, leader of the pirates she may be in windwaker, she is immediately kidnapped and helpless yet again in Wind Waker's sequel, Phantom Hourglass.

Rikku and Yuna over Tifa, Rinoa, Terra or Celes? Blasphemy.

I always thought perfect dark, beyond good and evil would rank over tomb raider. Jade was a great character. Let's not forget Chun li, and how she paved the way for women in fighting games. Or sniper wolf, one of the coolest villains out there, even if she did talk to much.

I'm not gonna deny you have some GREAT female characters up there....but there is a severe lack of anyone from Chrono Trigger! Ayla was such an amazingly bad ass female character, and I really don't think there were enough strong female characters like her (especially in the RPG world) when Chrono Trigger was released.

But then again, we all would make our lists differently, and I still think this list is pretty awesome.
