Mario Kart for the Wii: First Thoughts

I recently picked up Mario Kart for the Wii. I got it after GTA 4 so I haven't played it as much as I'd like to have. I admit for a self-proclaimed Nintendo fangirl I was not excited at all about this game. I have become somewhat jaded with Nintendo and their remarkable ability to re-hash the same thing over and over again, each time with a bigger price tag. I was expecting to rant on it about how similar it was to the other versions, mainly Mario Kart 64. Simply put, I was wrong. Starting with the very first race I was into the game.

The controls were daunting, knowing you have to steer with the Wiimote sensors seemed impossible. I thought I would have to spend hours getting used to it but in a matter of minutes I was pro. The game is fast and colorful. The courses are short, exciting, and each one is different. To me this has something that Mario Galaxy lacked, and that was nostalgia. When I played Mario Kart for the Wii I honestly felt like I was a little kid, I was having as much fun as I did when I played Mario Kart 64 some 10 years ago.

So yes this game is fundamentally just another Mario Kart game, but it works and sometimes there isn't anything wrong with playing something that has been done before. It has better graphics, more players, more cars, bikes, courses, and mechanics. It's a complete upgrade and I had way more fun than I thought I would.

I'm surprised you liked it this much. I was really disappointed. The graphics didn't seem that great to me and I don't like the Wiimote only driving (I'm a big fan of Excite Truck but I really didn't like the driving controls for this). In my opinion its not a terrible game, just not as exciting as it could have been.
