Xcore gaming not 'ok' for girls.

Oct. 11 1:27 PM by Nikole

A new study and survey done by GameDaily.com says that 60% of parents ban their daughters from playing games at a hardcore level whereas only 37% ban their sons. The study suggests that the social norm is that women should not be associated with activities that are violent like hunting and sports. The idea is that video games are synonymously known as being violent. This is because the top games in America are games that are not marketed towards girls. They key demographic is still 18-24 year old males.

Obviously a nice change in pace would be if games were marketed towards girls as well. However, this would mean that games might someday be targeted towards girls exclusively. I for one don't think that that is the best idea. Ideally we would see the same video games marketed towards all types of people, male and female. But it could easily go another way, in that the games could be made for girls, we might see Wedding Adventure games or the like. Girls and guys are capable of liking the same things but if parents and other consumers don't want their girls playing 'boyish' games then who knows what crap they'll think we want to play. For example a new game from Ubisoft for the DS is called Imagine Babyz. This game is part of a series of games targeted towards girls. The series consists of shopping, fashion, animals and babies. There is sooo much wrong with that.

Also the study tells us that the more variety of games we have, the more we are going to games separated into a good and a bad group. When games like Wii sports came out I thought it would tear down a lot of barriers and misconceptions people who were unfamiliar with gaming may have. But this study suggests that it simply has divided that gaming world into two distinct groups. Hardcore, violent, Jack Thompson-esque video games like Halo and GTA and another group that is much more family friendly. This group consists of the Wii games, and Guitar Hero. The study says that parents who play 'casual games' allow their children to play the same type of games but discourage playing the more violent games. Instead of showing how games can be for everyone it has made it harder to see the good in both.

Omg...that is wrong.

We can play games that guyz play too if anything its the same thing we all will see stuff like violence at one time or another.

Plus the baby game...0_o..what's with that I would not like to play that game.

If they follow gender sterotype's then the world is going back to the old age's...we should all play the same stuff if we choose so or as you said make games that aren't geared towards just male's or just female's but toward's both.

I would kill myself if more games came out that were just for girls like that. I like my violence and blood and gore. Jack thompson can suck my ass.

Indeed if I had to play games about flowers and weddings omg I would quit playing games lol.

For me I love FPS and brawlers any day.

this all has to do with how girls are socialized by their parents when they are young. perfect example with the baby game.

So like pretty much telling us we have to act girly if we do play games?...at a young age?

The truth is if the parents daughter want's to play game's they should allow her to pick a game she would like..not try and dump off some baby raiseing game on them or something...

Like myself when I stared playing agmes I stared with the hedgehog then mario...they rocked!...I didn't wait for like Princess games to play.

In the end it's just games people get joy off of it so let's just do that and enjoy them.

First sell them on "Imagine Babyz" and then sell them on "Imagine Teen Pregnancyz".

I prefer a good strategy game myself. My female cousin also likes the more violent games.

well if you girls need any place to play mi casa es tu casa...lol

girls who play hardcore games are so much more fun.

Well alot of girls play violent games foresay if that is what you want to call it beacuse that is prob the most fun game out there.

Like halo or GoW alot of people like them male and female because they are fun not beacause they are violent.

But just like males us female's like platformers and rpg's also...because in the end we are gamers and gamers love games!

Watch out Martini, you may not want to put that option out there. You never know how it may backfire. In the case of Jack Thompson, that goes for girls AND boys.
...
D*ck.
Anyway. This study isn't really much of a surprise, since when has anything been equal and fair towards girls? Girls who like the same kind of violent stuff as boys are often considered weird and different. Why should video games be any different? Still, I think anyone who would make a game like Imagine Babyz should be forced to play their POS every day for the rest of their miserable lives. Yeah, that's not reinforcing the stereotype. Go chew on some ass cheese.
Girls who play hardcore games rule.

M'mmmmmm baby! The other other white meat.

Oh, I think good ol' Jack is probably too busy chasing ambulances with the shooting in Cleveland to bother with anything else right now.

I wonder what game caused this shooting?

well, he's been on about counter-strike a lot lately. no word from him yet though. enjoy that while it lasts.

lmao i was scared this sight would be all girls :P

LMAO!!! yeah i havn't heard of anyone i know making girls stick with girly games....what the hell is a girly game? i mean i used to play "barbie detective" ok it's kinda scary...but i was 6....but it was fun back then! so let girls play guy games! and pray my parents let me play imagine babyz! lmao jk :D

and pray my parents let me play imagine babyz! lmao
Lol

Lol earthworm sam, I remember Barbie detective too! I always got the fat guy, though, even though the mystery shadow guy was skinny as crap. Lol. That game was the sh*t like ten or twelve years ago.

A video game that teaches girls to be mothers? Next theyre gonna make games that remove teh gay from young homosexuals.

Does Wedding Adventures include the bachelorette party, too? Use the DS stylus to pull off the thong of the male stripper. Yikes.

The study was actually conducted by PopCap games. Which is strange because the majority of people on PopCap games are female. Perhaps the problem is the word "hardcore". Many women that play on PopCap do not consider themselves as hardcore gamers but put in the same amount of hours a "hardcore" gamer would.

Maybe that would have made a change or maybe not. It is not hard to believe that parents are still of the opinion that videogames are a boy thing.

Why can't there be a game with a girl running through a mall with a chainsaw and getting to the best sales?

LOL. I have an idea for a girl's game too. Imagine a world like Pokemon...except it's populated by shoes. Not only do you have to collect them all, you have to create pairs by separately catching the left shoe and the right shoe for twice the collecting fun. Players battle each other by throwing the shoes at one another, and each shoe can be used in unique special attacks.

Maybe so I guess they see the mojority of gamers as boys because they are hardcore gamers...and yes I guess the boys playing games have gone on so long it is hard for parents to believe thier daughter could be a gamer also.

true, but times are changing...teh womenz gotz skillz in gaming. thus why i stay away from gears

Hey, my son thinks I'm odd because I like the more hardcore games like Doom, COD, RE, etc. He's 13 and just getting into the more hardcore games and FPS.

Can't there be a happy medium? I actually don't like shooting games and stuff like that. If you like playing video games with tons of violence, more power to you..that just isn't my cup of tea. And it's not just because I'm a girl either. It's just not what I'm into, and even if I were a boy, I think I wouldn't enjoy those games either. (Though I'm kind of a hypocrite, I do enjoy fighting games.)

But on the other hand, that doesn't mean I want to play girly games like Imagine Babyz or My Little Pony or whatever. "Games for girls" are totally unnecessary, IMO. Just let everyone play what they want to play.

Although most games are centered around guy's video game interests, I think girls have a right to play whatever they want. Just recently, I've played Mass Effect with the infamous "blue alien/human sex scene" and did not as much that would keep parents keeping their children away. I mean those games are rated M for a reason, and if they don't want them playing those then don't buy em.
