It's Halloween season (my favorite season!) and to celebrate I decided to kick off our Top 7 List section with the 7 scariest games. Now remember, these lists are only my opinion, they are in no way an official lists or have anything to do with sales numbers and charts. So let's begin!
1. Doom 3
Everyone remembers Doom, the game that you played in the dark. Doom was creepy for it atmosphere, it's "end of the world" feeling with such darkness and it's unnerving soundtrack. Monsters seemed to come out of nowhere, you only caught a glimpse as you frantically looked around with your flashlight. Doom didn't play with your head like some of the other games I will mention, but it definitely mastered the loud noise that made you jump effect.
Bloody Fun!
Ill Bleed was one of my all time favorite games on the Sega Dreamcast, I can only hope and pray for a sequel. Ill Bleed was a great game because it played with all of your senses, and you had to use your senses to make it through each story. The game was that of a cheesy 70's flick, and it was a hell of a lot of fun to play. Scary monsters, creepy soundtrack, and armed with little or no weapons makes for an awesomely scary game.
I wonder what happened here?
3. Eternal Darkness
Eternal Darkness is one of my favorite games on the Gamecube. Eternal Darkness didn't scare you with monsters and zombies, instead they used the psychological thriller approach. Strange sounds, someone knocking on your door but no ones there, footsteps upstairs, and the fact that at any point you could lose grip on sanity and the game will literally go crazy. I absolutely love the dark and foreboding feeling of this game, makes you wonder if it's just the game or are you actually losing your head.
Umm, sir? You have something on your face.
4. Resident Evil
Ah, Resident Evil, most gamers first love in the survival horror genre. I liked the first Resident Evil because it was so new, I mean how many of you still remember throwing your controller in fright the first time one of those zombie dogs jumped through the window?! I still remember the moment like it was yesterday, I love the other Resident Evil titles, but none of them got me the way the first one did, you always remember your first right? :)
Go for the head!
5. Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill 2 was a great game and great next step for the scary game enthusiasts. The storyline was a little better than the first one and monsters seemed to be smarter. Not to mention Pyramid Head, just the size of his blade and the sound of it on the concrete. It will be hard to top this Silent Hill in the newer installments to come.
Kneel before his might!
6. Silent Hill
The first Silent Hill holds a special place in my heart, it had everything a scary games needs, it had the jump in your seat moments like Resident Evil, it had the creepy environments like I had never seen before and it had some of the most unnerving sound effects and music I have ever heard. To this day, hearing the static from the Silent Hill radio still gives me the creepy crawlies. There were moments in the game while searching for more ammo or health that I would ask myself if it was really worth it to go through that next door because what could be on the other side would scare the hell out of me. Silent Hill was scary and uncomfortable to play, but one hell of a game, easily one of my all time favorites.
Is there a doctor in the house?
7. Fatal Frame
Lastly, at the top of my Scariest Games list comes Fatal Frame. Nothing has ever made me as uncomfortable and actually given me nightmares like Fatal Frame did. When you give me a game that puts me in an abandoned old house full of ghosts with no eyes, or ropes marks around their necks, or even broken necks hanging oddly to the side, a damn scary soundtrack that involves giggling children, and to top it all off I am only given a camera to defend myself with, then you have a terrifying mixture for pure scary fun! But you don't have time to be scared in Fatal Frame, you are expected to keep calm because at any moment a ghost could pop out in front of you and you have seconds to capture their image, so no throwing your controller in this game. Also the cut scenes were gruesome; one cut scene you see a girl blinded when her elders shove a mask onto her face with spikes through the eyeholes, or another cut scene when you see a girl quartered when she is tied to a rock bed and ropes are wrapped around her ankles, wrists and even her neck. Oh the blood, the blood! I love this game!
Geez, it's just a camera, not like I am stealing your soul or anything.
Hope you liked my very first Top 7 list! And once again, these are only my opinions, nothing official. I tried to judge the games on all aspects and not just cheap thrills. If you haven't played some of these games, give them a try, I kinda promise you won't be disappointed.

O.O.........
I'm not much for scary games, or scary anything for that matter. Needless to say that I haven't played any of those games. Maybe I'm missing out, but what can I say, I scare easily.
good list. i love horror games ever since i played RE on the playstation i was hooked. :)
Glad to see resident evil, silent hill, and fatal frame make the list.
I don't play many scary games, but I LOVE Fatal Frame and Fatal Frame 2. Fatal Frame is based off a true story, right? That's what I've heard.
Not really a scary game but I loved Zombies ate my Neighbors just for all the horror references.
the music in resident evil nemesis was kind of creepy plus the way nemesis used to pop out on you. it would be all quiet and then bam jumps out scares you.
this is first time i checked out this site. not to bad at all. plus i like the spam thing on here only lets you post once at a time stopping idiots fromspamming on site.
This is my first time here as well. I liked over from gamepro yesterday. I love the site so far.
Great picks. I like how you only chose the first two Silent Hill games.
Ill Breed sounds awesome! Now, who wants to let me borrow their Dreamcast?
Call of Cthulu on Xbox was also a good scary game and one of my favs.
You might want to put F.E.A.R. on that list somewhere. It sure as hell beats DOOM on my list, Doom uses the same damn tactics every time it tries to scare you, the only difference is the AI was retarded zombies, so you just move back a couple feet and shoot the zombie, move a corridor ahead and repeat.
I still have stains in my undies from the original Silent Hill.
damn good selection girl.
btw eternal darkness should definitely get a sequel...who developed that game?
In the top pic, it looks like that weird elephant man looking dude is only trying to help that guy who collapsed in the men's room. Maybe give him CPR or mouth to mouth or something. We shouldn't judge him by his hideously grotesque deformities. We should instead help him and call the paramedics. That collapsed guy seems to have lost a little blood.
Holy crap! I can't believe anyone else actually played Illbleed! Pretty funny and creepy, though I didn't like how the object of the game was to avoid the weird and bizarre traps and enemies. Still, Illbleed was an unjustly overlooked game.
Resident Evil, Silent Hill are considered one of the best survival horror IMO. But Fatal Frame tops it all if you're into ghost/horror stories...
Is Illbleed really that scary? I still have a Dreamcast and will pick it up if it's worth it. Note: I eat chips and dip during Hellraiser and ask for seconds, so I hope it's really good. What order are these in? Is #1 supposed to be the scariest game or would that be #7?
I caught that later on but didn't post a followup. Sorry, I'm a guy, so I like looking at the pretty pictures and not so much the wreding and the righting.
Hah, I'm too much of a wuss for a lot of these games. Just looking at the list practically freaked me out. I'm going back to my RPG's now, thanks...
JoeSFO: Ill Bleed is scary in a fun, campy 70's horror movie kinda way.
VivaLeResistance: Silicon Knights made Eternal Darkness.
Bigfoot1291: I played Fear and was super bored by it. But that's just me. One other game that I wanted on the list but I just couldn't fit it in with only a 7 Game list was Condemned, that game was just dark and very uncomfortable to play, and also very unique; I can't wait for the sequel.
I agree Fatal Frame totally freaked me out!! After the doll room scene I could not sleep!
I agree with Bigfoot1291, F.E.A.R. should be on the list. Other than that, good job and great site!
I love the first two Fatal Frame games. My friends and I would play those for hours and end up freaking ourselves out. I've never been big on most of the "survival horror" genre of games(mostly due to the horrible control schemes), but Fatal Frame was really easy to control and the ambiance was incredible. Hearing the tinkling of bells and a little girl laughing just behind you, and when you spin around there is nothing there or a doll's head falls off one of the dolls on the table. So many great moments in those games.
Great list! Also great site. I just stumbled upon it today thanks to Digg.
Nothing I love more than a really scary adult orientated game. Unfortunately they just don't seem to make many of them and those that they do make tend to not be as scary as I would like. Heck my love for scary games even lead me to design my own which I am currently working on. Granted it will be awhile before it is done, but when it is I guarantee it will be one of the scariest and funniest out there. lol
Anyway... great post and site! Now I gotta find a copy of Fatal Frame to play as it was one of only two on your list I haven't played yet. At the time it sounded boring since you only have a camera. You made it sound more interesting then it did reading the box. lol
Thanks, Raychul. I might pick it up, but I'm going for the good stuff first. I'm going to try Fatal Frame and Silent Hill 2. I think I might already have Silent Hill 2 but just never played it.
