Nintendo made a lot of announcements this week (For the Wii news check out Nikoles article) and have finally confirmed rumors about a new system, it has been called the DSi. This new system is set to release in Japan on November 1st. But lets get into the more technical stuff, what can this bad boy do that the NDS can't?
Lets start with Specs.
Screen Size: Two 3.25-inch displays
Screen Resolution: 256 x 192
CPU Speed/type: One 67 MHz (ARM) and one 33 MHz ARM7TDMI
Form Factor: 5.85 x 3.33 x 0.99 inches
Camera: 2 cameras, one with VGA resolution
Memory: SD slot, internal storage (unknown size)
Internet: Wi-Fi
Browser: Yes
Online Store: Yes (DSi Shop)
Touch Screen: Yes (single touch)
System Size: 12% thinner than DS Lite
DSi and DS comparison
As you can tell by the specs they have updated the DSi with some pretty cool additions including two cameras, one is on the outside and one is conveniently tucked away right where the microphone is currently on the NDS. Nintendo also announced that they will be launching the "DSi Shop" so they can sell content directly over Wi-Fi with prices also connected to the Nintendo Points (Wii Points), so the prices range from 0 - 800 points. One of the cool things they have included with the system is that it will be bundled with a 1000 Nintendo point card until March of 2010. Only thing about this new system is that it will be getting rid of the GBA Slot entirely.
Nintendo has called the DSi a "third platform" so as to imply that it will not be competing directly with the NDS, how thats possible I don't know. The colors that it will launching with are Black and White and it will cost ¥189,000 (approx. US $178) and launches Nov 1st in Japan. There has been no release date set for it in the US or Europe yet.
There have also been a few new games announced for the DS/DSi including:
Wagamama Fashion Girls' Mode: Another Fashion Game..thanks Nintendo!
Aruite Wakaru Seikatsu Rhythm Game: the fitness game featuring a pedometer attachment.
Sekai no Gohan Shaberu! DS O-Ryouri Navi: sequel to Cooking Guide with recipes from around the world.
"Taboo: The Sith Sense 2k9": some kind of fortune telling game involving tarot and palm reading.
Tomodachi Collection: Game that lets you interact with Miis.
Made in Wario/Wario ware: Wario's name doesn't appear in the tenative title but it is clearly a sort of "Made in Series" featuring Wario.
3D Picross
Mario & Luigi RPG 3: nuff said.
So it seems that Nintendo kept all of its major news away from E3 and strictly for TGS. Nintendo you have redeemed yourself.

thats pretty cool they made it a little bigger and added the cameras. but no gba slot. i still got some gba games i still like to play.
I don`t have DS or PSP yet, but since both systems are getting new versions, it's difficult to make a choice... :S
sounds, feels and looks cool, thank god for technology.
Is it just me or any of you think that sega should resurrect the Game gear, i still have and play mine and is grrrrreat (like tony the tiger would say)
O.o, this may make me get a DS instead of a PSP...........
my phone has a camera. so does my camera. my ds does not need a camera. nor does it need a price tag higher than the psp.
This is actually odd because Nintendo has the habit of staying away from TGS and embracing E3. Although I suppose they save their info for the fans, and not the media.
But honestly... is this even a new system? I'm not familiar with the Specs of the old DS, but is the graphics processor better? Or is this merely a Gameboy color, as opposed to an advance.
"Taboo: The Sith Sense 2k9"
Hmm...for some reason it sounds like a Star Wars fortune telling game ;P haha, jk
I already have a regular DS, but this might be worth buying (I have the original DS from when it came out). Time to switch? Or get a PSP instead? Decisions, decisions...
and you thought it printed money before!
I'm kinda sad about the removal of the GBA slot... it made it so I could play all my games, and then whenever I felt like being silly, I could pop in a ds title.
im kinda mad i gotta buy this b/c i JUST got a new Lite 3 months ago.
Nintendo DS News - From TGS
O_O
This just shows how much journalist girls know about gaming indusry.
In case you don't know what I am talking about, I am telling you.
This event called Nintendo Media Summit not Tokyo Game Show, I am amazed how, not just you, but other girls also thought that these news came from TGS.
Traditionally Nintendo does not participate in the Tokyo Game Show, and they haven't announced whether they will participate this year or not, but they will most likely not gonna be there again since TGS is one week away.
Thank you Zones for your hard work in keeping gamegirl.com the best it can possibly be! I am sure the other readers appreciate your up to the minute information and willingness to help us to help you! And done with a dashing smile I bet!
But I hope Zones, that you wouldn't be invalidating anything that would ever come from your mouth ever again by making an assumption on an entire gender? Especially on a site ran by said gender? I didnt think so.
Thanks for your devotion,
Navie
In regards to the subject of the post, I won't be getting this. nintendo essentially now wants you to pay for GBA games you already own to be able to play them on the new system now that they removed the GBA slot.
And my DSLite already has download capabilities.
@ Navie
What do you expect? Nintendo is in the business of breaking hearts and making money. Seeing as they are the only ones making any money from single console sales, and their system is the most bought console on the market, also, they essentially tricked a whole wide audience of dedicated Nintendo fans into buying their system, on the promise they would bring new and innovative ideas to the console, yet it burned out and honestly has no real promise other than Wii sports resort!!! And lest we forget the ridiculous Wii points.
Besides that they're little angels.
Point being, they always end up ripping us off by taking away features that should be standard.
I have to say that Nintendo is losing me with all these new innovations. All it takes is a simple Mario or Zelda game to keep me happy, but I see none of those on the horizon.
@masterfang I gues i was holding out in a blind hope lol. Ah nintendo , we used to be such friends!
How i wish i had PSP2 of course it only a matter of time... should compare its spec to this...DS.
Of course the PSP2 are for different types of games.
Is it a DS with a camera and memory or does it have different hardware architecture?
Should I buy this?
I hope America and Europe get this in time for XMas not just Japan (pipe dream).
@Zones Just because you can point out a technicality doesn't mean your not a jerk.
@Navie
Well we can only hope they come to their senses, but there has been a slow decline since the Gamecube. I really hope the N64 isn't the peak.
yeayyyyyyy it still lets me use my original gamepro account in here, calmity your favorite ghost is back.....ghostlymatty
*yawn*
Mario & Luigi 3 WONT be on DS O___O??????? ok nintendo, we ARE going to have serious problems right now (i just read that. yea im late). y get rid of the GBA slot????? what did it ever do to them?????? im gonna cry
I don't think it's appropriate to use the word technicality and your in the same sentence.
@Navie
No worries, I am no misogynist, and I am not making an assumption on an entire gender, but the word 'redemmed' is kinda out of place, I don't know what Nintendo did to redeem themselves, the new DSi that has higher price tag than a PSP? or announcing GameCube rehashes for Wii each for $35? The article should've talked about the announcements without putting personal opinions, that is why my first post was attack. Girls just love Nintendo.
By that, do you mean R4/M3 cards or I am not getting something right?
I see Zones' desire to play grammar cop overpowered his ability to comprehend MrGregs' point.
(psst, hey dude, it's an internet forum not a term paper)
seriously ppl, y must some1 ALWAYS speak up for 1 of the GGs????? they can do it themselves (look @ Navies post). thats all im sayn. now u can all go back to your regular program
Again Zones, I hope you aren't making an assumption about an entire gender with "girls just love nintendo." The fact of the matter is, this is a gaming blog site, and blog would suggest opinion; whereas gaming "news" site would indicate factual, unbiased information. But thank you for the suggestions. I assure you, they will be taken on board. *two thumbs up*
Yes, I was referring to my M3 card.
@Navie
What do mean all girls don't love Nintendo next you'll tell me girls can play games and talk about them on the internet writing blogs were boys have to READ and comment.
wait did i say have to i meant (were boys read and comment) oh well that's my failed sarcasm maybe Zones can help my English.
Anyway people can accidentally say something they didn't mean so lets not rush to the attack unless of course they did say it with apparent firm believe.
(see how this comment links to my above post..you know just pointing that out.)
Who is attacking?
Well, let me just explain that I take exception to amateur critics that act all superior because they pointed out some little technicality. And it's even worse when they use that false sense of superiority to make sexist statements, play grammar cop, and attack the writer for expressing her opinion rather than simply state facts.
are you trying to tell me that not all girls don't love nintendo?! 0_0
@Zones- Thank you for correcting me but I did notice the mistake but was unable to fix it since I was on my way to E for All.
Also in the future how about you be less of a sexiest prick? It will help you out a lot later in life.
@Miz_Calamity
Ouch nice and mean at the same time.
@Miz_Calamity
Ouch nice and mean at the same time.
@MrGregs- sorry for the late reply! They haven't given the any information on how much the internal storage is but they will have an SD slot so you can store pictures on an SD card.
pwned!
